Social Approval: Photographer Groups

February 16, 2017

Why I Don’t Give a Shit

Your work is your work. It’s incredible regardless of whether 10 or 1.4k people from a 30k member group like it or not. Stop doubting yourself. Just because everyone doesn’t like it, does not mean that it isn’t an incredible piece of art.

It literally hurts people feelings and creative souls, when they don’t reach a certain number of likes. That’s bullshit. People get over it. A bride is not going to go to your site and be like “OMFG he/she has a Choo Choo!”.

What the fuck even is that imaginary choo choo? It’s a fucking thing a group of people made up. It’s not real; there is no real meaning to it. Your photograph get’s lost in the midst of everyone else who got one.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that there was a group of people/artist, some of who’s work truly inspire me, saw a gap in the market to showcase artist. But that’s all that publication is. An online forum where pretty much only photographers go and post their work for other photographers to look at. At least for myself, I only post in there so that I can show others something that I am truly proud of! I don’t seek anyone’s approval. So when I don’t get hundreds of likes, it’s doesn’t matter to me. It used to but not anymore.

If you are making personal work because you’re a creative, awesome I applaud you. Keep doing you. FUCK whatever everyone else thinks! While they are obsessing over likes you are obsessing over what makes you content. What fills your heart not your ego.

I like work that is inspiring to me as a creative. Instead of the community becoming something of a support group, it’s become something more of where people don’t want to post because they are scared that it’s not to par with everyone else’s work. I myself have had people CC my work when I didn’t ask for it. I DON’T GIVE A FUCK. I’ve had some of my favorite, and photographs I considered to be my best work, not get more than 10 likes. Then there were photographs, I honestly didn’t think were that great, got over 1k likes. Don’t get me wrong I love all my photographs but I love others just a little more.

It simply goes to show that people will like different things. It doesn’t mean you suck or that you’re not talented. It means we are all different. And that’s okay. But please stop doubting yourself and just continue to be the awesome creative you are.
